Ald. Dudzik Congratulates Walt Whitman Elementary Students

Ald. Dudzik congratulates the students of Walt Whitman Elementary School, 4200 S. 54th St. for their winning efforts in the 2006 Cans for Cash Recycling Challenge. Whitman students were the top collectors among 23 local schools with 665 pounds of aluminum cans and received a cash prize of $500 for school recycling programs.

"Through hard work, determination and tremendous dedication, Walt Whitman students learned the value of recycling," said Ald. Dudzik. "Aluminum is the most recyclable of all materials, and throwing away a single aluminum can is like wasting six ounces of gasoline."

Ald. Dudzik, a graduate of Whitman, was proud to show off his red Whitman school sweatshirt. At the event Ald. Dudzik presented a Common Council commendation to teacher Kathleen Pietrykowski and Principal Patrick Rehl.

Craig Montessori Elementary School collected 242 pounds during a two-week period to finish second and Emerson Elementary finished third with 197 pounds of aluminum cans.
