Neighborhood Development

The Bronzeville District is located at the southernmost end of the Harambee neighborhood, and the northernmost end of Halyard Park. Adjacent neighborhoods include Riverwest, Brewers Hill, Williamsburg Heights, and North Division. From a residential perspective, many of the homes in Bronzeville were built prior to the turn of the century.

To encourage redevelopment in the area, the City of Milwaukee is offering financial incentives to owners of homes in the Bronzeville neighborhood, as well as those interested in moving in the District.

Homeowners can be approved for up to $10,000 to assist in conserving and updating their home. Also, those interested in building a home can purchase a vacant lot for $1.00 through the Bronzeville New Homes Initiative on which to build their home. In addition, $10,000 in forgivable grant funds is available to those who agree to live in their newly constructed home in Bronzeville for 5 years. Both programs are operated through the Neighborhood Improvement Development Corporation (NIDC).

Beechie Brooks Targeted Investment Neighborhood

Brooks TIN

The City of Milwaukee’s Targeted Investment Neighborhood (TIN) initiative is designed to sustain and increase owner-occupancy, provide quality rental housing, strengthen property values, and improve the physical appearance and quality of life of neighborhoods. TINs focus resources for three years on a small area, generally six to twelve city blocks.

An area near Bronzeville has been designated the Beechie Brooks TIN. Bronzeville’s neighborhood partners include Northcott Neighborhood House and Harambee Ombudsman Project. The goals of the TIN program also include reversing trends of disinvestment by improving the physical and social infrastructure of a neighborhood and improving its desirability as a place to live and do business.

This particular TIN district is named after Beechie Brooks, the local African American developer of the Halyard Park neigborhood. The boundaries for the TIN are I-43 to the west, North King Drive to the east, West Center Street to the north, and West Garfield Avenue to the south.

Specific investment offered in the Beechie Brooks TIN:

  • Home rehabilitation grants up to $10,000 will be made to property owners in the area who qualify. Funds must be used to fix up properties.
  • The city owns 20 vacant lots in the neighborhood and will market the lots for new home construction. Each lot can be purchased for $1.00 to those who qualify.
  • First-time homebuyers who live in the Bronzeville area can seek assistance to purchase in the neighborhood.
