Under the direction of Mayor Tom Barrett and in partnership with the Milwaukee Common Council, the Department of City Development works each day in a variety of ways to guide development, grow opportunities and strengthen neighborhoods.

The City worked with manufacturer Medovations to grow its business and add 12 new employees to its 42-member team. The company hires nearly all of its employees from the inner city and provides on-the-job training. By acquiring and cleaning up a tax-delinquent brownfield, the City assisted Medovations with its first physical expansion in 26 years.
Progress in the redevelopment of the Park East Corridor continues this week with excavation work on the future site of a 5-story Aloft Hotel, along the Milwaukee River and just north of East Juneau Avenue.

The City of Milwaukee used vacant lots and a neighborhood Tax Incremental Financing District to add new affordable homes for families and to provide existing homeowners forgivable renovation loans. A plan to guide future development and grow opportunities in neighborhoods of the Northeast Side of Milwaukee is ready for approval. The plan recommends catalytic projects and the creation of a Milwaukee River Overlay District.
