Havenwoods Economic Development Corporation (HEDC) is the nonprofit community development partner working in conjunction with the Havenwoods Business Improvement District #31. Their mission is to promote and recruit new and existing businesses to the area and create family supporting wage jobs for residents. Havenwoods encompasses the area bounded by West Good Hope Road, West Silver Spring Drive, North Sherman Boulevard, and North 76th Street.
Earlier this year HEDC was awarded a two-year $40,000 Helen Bader Foundation Grant to establish the Walk to Work Employer-Assisted Homeownership Program to assist Havenwoods area employees in buying homes in the area. The program will reduce the number of absentee homeowners in the area and create a local workforce committed to the stabilization of the neighborhood.
The Walk to Work program will recruit Havenwoods employers to offer home buying assistance to their employees through down payment assistance programs. The strategy will help to revitalize the neighborhood and will help to retain and attract new businesses and employees.
The grant funds will be used to hire a part-time staff person at HEDC who will reach out to employers and connect the employees with homeownership workshops, banking institutions, one on one counseling, down payment assistance and loan closing. These services will be provided through a partnership with Select Milwaukee, a home buying counseling organization.
