How to Dispute a Ticket

How can I challenge a parking ticket I received?

If you want to challenge your parking ticket, you must call (414) 344-0840 to schedule an appearance with the Parking Citation Review Manager. The Parking Citation Review Manager is located on the second floor of the Police Administration Building at 951 North James Lovell Street.

If you can not reach an agreement with the Parking Citation Review Manager, the Municipal Court will make every effort to schedule you for a Municipal Court appearance on the same day.  The Municipal Court is on the lower level of the same building where the Parking Citation Review Manager is located.

What are 'discovery rights?'

You have the right to "discover," or find out or look at, certain types of information that you can prove might help your case. These might include inspecting documents related to your case, getting the names and addresses of witnesses, or asking for a device (like a radar gun) to be tested for accuracy if it was used to help accuse you of the violation.

How do I "discover" the information available to me?

To obtain information available through your discovery rights, you must file a written "Motion for Discovery" with the court. You must do this within 30 days after your first court appearance. A court hearing on your motion will then be scheduled. For a pre-printed Motion for Discovery form to use, please click here.

At least five (5) days before your hearing date, you must serve the City Attorney with a copy of your Motion for Discovery. It must go to the following address:

Ordinance Enforcement Division, Office of the City Attorney
Room 205 of the Police Administration Building
951 North James Lovell Street, Milwaukee, WI 53233

At the hearing, the prosecution may object to your Motion of Discovery. The judge will decide which information you should be allowed to review.

What can I do if my driver's license has been suspended?

If your license has been suspended because you have not paid your fine, you can get your driver's license by paying your fines to the court by mail, or by paying personally at the court or at either of the two Violation Bureau Payment Centers:

  • North Payment Center - 6223 North Teutonia Avenue
  • South Payment Center - 2980 South Chase Avenue

Both North and South payment centers are open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and on Saturdays from 8 a.m. until noon.

If you have not paid your fine, and the judge has ordered the suspension of your driver's license for a period of five years, you will have to do several things. You must pay the fine in full, and then apply for reinstatement of your driving privileges at the local office of the Motor Vehicle Division of the state Department of Transportation. Be prepared to pay the reinstatement fee of $50 to the Motor Vehicle Division.

If my driver's license has been suspended, can I apply for an occupational license through the Milwaukee Municipal Court?

Effective November 1, 1996, the Milwaukee Municipal Court can no longer issue occupational licenses. If you wish to apply for an occupational license, you must go in person to the Department of Transportation.

For the Department of Transportation locations near you, call (414) 266-1000 and follow the instructions to listen to a list of offices in the Milwaukee metropolitan area.
