Dear Friends,

Milwaukee celebrates summer with a vast array of dynamic events, festivals, and other entertainment. The start of summer signals the commencement of abundant affordable and fun activities, with this weekend being a classic example.

I’m extremely pleased to welcome the Circus Parade back to our City streets this weekend, a well-established attraction that appeals to spectators of all ages. Step right up… this is an event you won’t want to miss!

This weekend will also feature Bastille Days in the heart of downtown Milwaukee, the South Shore Frolics in Bay View and many church festivals throughout the City.

As if that’s not enough options, the Milwaukee Brewers will take on the Los Angeles Dodgers at Miller Park.

Simply put: there isn’t a better city to be in this weekend than Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I’m pleased through these trying economic times, our City still offers such high-quality, yet inexpensive options for the community’s enjoyment.

This coming weekend is the perfect ending to what was a deeply gratifying week as we released the six month crime statistics.

As Mayor of Milwaukee, my highest priority has been public safety, and keeping our citizens safe. No other issue has consumed more of my personal time and attention that reducing crime in our neighborhoods. In the last two years, we have begun to see real progress.

I’m pleased to report the numbers we’re releasing today confirm the downward trend in crime is continuing.

In the first six months of 2009, we have seen nearly 3,200 fewer crime victims in the city than a year ago at this time. Violent crime is down 15.5% from a year ago, and 27% since 2007.

I applaud Chief Flynn, the men and women of the Milwaukee Police Department, neighborhood residents, faith leaders and others who are working together in partnership to make our neighborhoods safer.
