NEWS FROM THE MAYOR

Dear Friends,

This past week Milwaukee captured national attention as a city of heroes, where perfect strangers disregarded the flames and rushed to a burning car that had flipped over and caught fire.

Before long, two off-duty Milwaukee firefighters and a Milwaukee police lieutenant ran to the scene. All three of them sustained injuries during their daring rescue, but it did not discourage their attempts.

Just as flames began to fully engulf the car, the last family member, a small boy, was freed from the van. The entire family survived, thanks to the bravery of Milwaukee’s citizens.

I applaud the extraordinary efforts of the community that united to save this family, along with the firefighters and police lieutenant that went beyond the call of duty. I’m honored to recognize the bravery of all the citizens who rose to the occasion.

True community happens when people are willing to put their neighbors’ needs before their own. Heroes sacrifice their safety to assist others. As demonstrated last week, and also featured on the national news, the City of Milwaukee is a true community, full of heroes.

Library Community Meetings

This past Wednesday marked the first of eight community meetings the Milwaukee Public Library is hosting to give Milwaukee residents the opportunity to learn more about the need for new models of library service for the future. Residents will also have the chance to share their thoughts and ideas on the various library options presented.

I hope your busy schedule allows you to attend one of the remaining meetings listed below. As I travel the City, I hear over and over again how valuable our libraries are to residents. I know residents care about the future of libraries, so I encourage you to go to these meetings and express your thoughts about this important community asset with Library Director Paula Kiely.

I’m committed to continuing to provide residents with the best library service our City can afford. Getting your input will guide us as we make future decisions on services, products and facilities.
