NEWS FROM THE MAYOR

Dear Friends, 

I just got back from Washington D.C. and I want to update you on my activities there. 

On Wednesday, I attended a meeting hosted by Vice-President Biden and key administration officials. Through the Federal Stimulus Package, I’m committed to putting Milwaukeeans to work and improving our infrastructure in a meaningful and responsible way. Vice-President Biden stressed the need for local government officials to fund only those projects that are worthwhile. “No swimming pools or golf courses,” he said. Other officials described potential opportunities ranging from housing to energy efficiency to public safety.

Milwaukee was in the spotlight on Thursday when I testified before the U.S. Water Resources and Environment Subcommittee regarding “Efforts to Address Urban Stormwater Runoff.” I’m pleased Milwaukee’s positive efforts in reducing discharges into Lake Michigan have been recognized. I also had to the chance to meet with my friend and former colleague Representative Jim Oberstar, Chairman of the Transportation & Infrastructure Committee. He’s a champion of High Speed Rail is committed to getting high speed rail from Chicago to Milwaukee and up to the Twin Cities. You’ll hear more about that later.

Finally, I met with Jonathan Schnur, the founder and Chief Executive Officer of New Leaders for New Schools. Jonathan is on leave from New Leaders and is currently serving as an advisor to Secretary Duncan. He stressed the importance of the “Race to the Top Fund,” which is a stimulus program competitive grant aimed at improving education quality and results. I look forward to working with Governor Doyle and Superintendant Bill Andrekopoulos to prepare an application for a grant from that fund to dramatically improve the Milwaukee Public Schools.

It was a very good trip. It's essential to have Milwaukee’s interests front and center with the Administration and Congress.
