FLU UPDATE
Dear Friends,
In the wake of the current flu outbreak, I’m writing to update you on the precautions the City of Milwaukee is taking to ensure the health and safety of our residents.
On Sunday, Health Commissioner Bevan Baker and I announced that the Health Department was prepared and would continue to prepare for the spread of the flu to Milwaukee.
Early in the week, we invoked a “Pandemic Preparedness Plan” that we have been working on with local, regional and state partners over the past three to four years.
On Wednesday, we were informed that Milwaukee had two probable cases of the infection. To help curb the spread of the infection, we ordered four schools closed as a precautionary measure. Alexander Mitchell Integrated Arts School, 1728 S. 23rd St.; Riverside University High School, 1615 E. Locust St.; Clement Avenue Elementary School, 3666 S. Clement Ave.; and Rogers Street Academy, 2430 W. Rogers St., are closed until further notice. On Thursday, we announced the closing of Allen Field Elementary, 730 W. Lapham. We will continue to closely monitor the situation and make the determination early Sunday evening on whether or not to reopen the schools.
My priority is the public's health. As a father I want to assure you I will make sure that our children can learn in a safe and healthy environment.
While it appears that the spread of the flu will not end anytime soon, there are precautionary measures you can take to protect yourselves and others against the infection.
First, if you develop flu-like symptoms, I urge you to stay home from work or school and contact your health care provider. Symptoms include fever, sore throat, cough and runny or stuffy nose.
Second, treat the spread of this flu as you would the spread of the common cold or standard flu. Wash your hands frequently. Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze. Keep your home and work area clean. Keyboards and phones are especially prone to bacteria.
These simple steps will help ensure your safety and the safety of others in the community.
While the outbreak is certainly cause for concern, there is no need to panic. The City of Milwaukee Health Department has the current situation under control and will take further precautions, when necessary, to combat the spread of the flu.
I will also do everything in my power to keep residents of Milwaukee safe, and I will update you on any future developments.
Sincerely,
Mayor, City of Milwaukee
