 On October 23, 2002, the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office dedicated a new state-of-the-art-training academy located at 9225 S. 68th St. Franklin, Wisconsin. The academy is a 46,500 square foot facility that includes 8 classrooms, 2 lecture halls, a physical training room, mock training cells, 3 standard pistol ranges with a total of 20 firing points and an indoor 360 degree tactical firearms training room. Four of the classrooms can be joined and expanded to seat between 20 to 200 individuals. The two lecture halls each have seating for 57 people and can be joined so that up to 130 people can observe the same lecturer. The tactical firearms training room allows realistic scenario based training where officers can fire their service weapons directly at the walls where the rounds are absorbed. 
The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Training Academy provides up-to-date law enforcement training for Milwaukee County Sheriff's Deputies and law enforcement officers from agencies throughout Southeastern Wisconsin. The training academy prepares law enforcement officers to serve the community professionally and focuses on ethics and leadership. It provides basic law enforcement as well as advanced training. Academy staff are sworn personnel who use their career experiences to enhance the training they provide. Law enforcement training begins with a 13-week (520 hours) law enforcement course certified by the State of Wisconsin. It combines educational lectures, class participation, physical activities, physical participation, written and physical testing. To complete the course an officer must attain a 75% average on all tests, successfully pass the physical proficiencies in Defensive Tactics, Firearms, Emergency Vehicle Operations, Vehicle Stops, Interpersonal Communications and Ethics. Trainees take the learned material and apply it to realistic scenarios, which are used as the final determination to pass the course. A graduation ceremony is held for officers who pass the course and is attended by the officer's families, friends and agency Sheriff's and Chiefs. Following graduation officers from outside the Sheriff's Office return to their agencies. After graduation, Milwaukee County Sheriff's Deputies participate in a 4-week field-training program, where they are partnered with an experienced Deputy Sheriff.  After the field training program the deputy sheriff will return to the training academy for a 3-week (120 hours) jailer-training program. Upon completion of the entire 20-week training cycle the officer will be assigned to one of the Sheriff's Office bureaus.
Adjacent to the Training Academy is a memorial dedicated to the eight Milwaukee County Sheriff's Deputies that died in the line of duty while in  service to the Milwaukee County community. The statute, titled "Call to Duty" sits atop a five-foot high octagonal marble base where each of the officer's names is inscribed. The site was selected because it can be viewed from the Academy's main hall and will constantly remind deputies of the sacrifices all officers make to the community. |
