Winter Parking Regulations In Effect

Winter parking regulations are in effect in the City of Milwaukee from December 1 to March 1.  As snow accumulates, the already narrow streets on the east side become even more narrow making the streets impassable. City snowplows and emergency vehicles such as ambulances and fire engines have a difficult time navigating the streets.

Your cooperation with winter parking regulations will help snowplows clear the streets and allow emergency vehicles to get where they need to go more efficiently and effectively.

If you park overnight on the street, you will need to purchase a night parking permit from any Milwaukee Police Department district station.  Most city streets have alternate side night parking from December 1 to March 1 unless the street has a posted parking restriction or is a through highway or bus route. Posted parking restrictions include "Snow Route Tow-Away Zone No Stopping During Snow Emergency," "No Parking" on one side of the street, either for the entire December 1 to March 1 period, or with a monthly alternation of the prohibited side, or "No Parking When Snowfall 4 Inches or More." Also, overnight parking is prohibited on many through highways and bus routes from December 1 to March 1. These streets are not posted.

The City is asking, in particular, for more cooperation with the 4" rule restriction.  This regulation allows parking on both sides of a street unless snow accumulates to a depth of four or more inches.  After a four-inch accumulation – anytime of day or night – no parking is allowed on the side of the street where the sign is posted until the snow has been removed. After the snow has been removed, you may once again park your vehicle on the posted side. The fine for violating the four-inch rule is $30.

It is illegal to leave a vehicle parked on the street in the same place for more than 24 hours. These vehicles will be ticketed and towed if not moved in a timely manner. To claim a towed vehicle, call the Milwaukee tow lot at 286-2700.

Residents having questions about night and winter parking regulations can call 286-8350. Customer service representatives are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. You can also access the City's parking web page at www.parking.mpw.net.
