New Employee Orientation
New Employee Orientation is held from 8:30 am - 12:30 pm (approx) each Monday of pay week in Room 301-A of City Hall (any changes to the location will be posted in the following schedule). If the Monday of pay week is a City Holiday, the Orientation session will be held on Tuesday.
Please have the employees arrive a few minutes early to sign-in and seat themselves as the program begins promptly at 8:30 am!
REGISTRATION INSTRUCTIONS:
All employees should be registered to attend (see exceptions below) by their Payroll Clerk or Supervisor. Please send an email directly to Judy Kammermann at jkamme@milwaukee.gov, or call her at x3650 (email is preferred). Be sure to register employees for the Orientation session. It is important for Employee Relations to know ahead of time how many are attending and their status.
Please provide each registered employee with an Information Sheet prior to their attending.
Please provide the following information when registering an employee:
- Employee's full name (first, middle initial, last)
- Job Title
- Union or Employee Group
- If not in a union, say if they are "Mgmt" or "Non-Mgmt/Non-Repr
- PeopleSoft ID (6-digit), if known at time of registration
- Department/Division
- Employee Status -- It is important for us to know if the employee is one of the following:
- Reinstatement
- Rehire after Retirement
- Half-Time with Benefits
- Going from non-benefit, to benefit status (i.e., City Laborer "Regular, " etc.)
- Transfer from MPS or MMS
- Date attending New Employee Orientation
IMPORTANT! Employees who are exempt, become regular, are reinstated, or transfer from the Milwaukee Public Schools or MMSD should attend Orientation. Be sure to note the employee's status in the email to Judy Kammermann. It is vital for employees to have a current beneficiary form and group life insurance form on file with the Employes' Retirement System (ERS).
Employees that should not attend:
- City Laborer Seasonal
- College Intern
- Graduate Intern
- Sworn Personnel
- Temporary Personnel
- Urban Forestry Intern
- Part-time employees that work less than 20 hours per week
MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION:
Some employees are falling through the cracks and do not attend Orientation for various reasons.
It is imperative that all new employees that meet the criteria listed above attend in order to receive and complete important forms such as:
- Health / Dental Insurance
- Group Life Insurance
- Pension Application
- Direct Deposit Form
- Residency Certification Form
- Acknowledgement of Receipt of City Policies Form
At the time of eligibility for pension, the employees must complete a membership application and beneficiary form as well as to provide a copy of their social security card.
During Orientation, employees also receive useful information such as the "Working for the City of Milwaukee" information booklet, important phone numbers, City policies, etc.
IMPORTANT NOTE TO PAYROLL ASSISTANTS FROM THE
EMPLOYES' RETIREMENT SYSTEM (ERS):
Please post earnings immediately for employees who go over 1,040 hours in a year or are working more than half-time. You may call ext. 3557 for questions regarding pension eligibility and ask to speak with the Member Services Manager or the Enrollment Administrator.
It is no longer necessary to contact our office regarding retire employees who are rehired. They now fall under the same rules as a "new" employee and can be enrolled based on the same criteria as "new" employees.
Earnings should be posted for all qualified hires, including temporary employees, who have previously been members of the system. It is no longer necessary to contact ERS regarding an employee who has a break in service. Please be aware that ERS is no longer issuing pension numbers.
