Crime Down for Seventh Straight Quarter

Oct. 20 - For the seventh straight quarter Milwaukee Police are reporting a reduction of violent crime.  In 2009 there have been over 4,000 fewer crime victims in Milwaukee than there were at this time in 2008.

Violent crime in Milwaukee is down 18%  when compared to 2008 and down 25% over the past two years.  "This is a trend and not an anomaly," Chief Edward said of the crime reduction.  "Our mission to reduce crime, fear, and disorder in the City of Milwaukee is proving successful."

Unveil Branding / Recruiting Campaign

Aug. 3 - MPD, in partnership with advertising agency Cramer-Krasselt / Milwaukee, unveiled a wide-reaching campaign designed to “brand” the MPD and Milwaukee with a positive perception of the department and the city, and to assist MPD in its recruiting efforts. The theme, “Be a Force,” will appear on billboards, television, radio and print starting in August.

The campaign, more than a year in development, was provided on a pro bono basis by Cramer-Krasselt – no taxpayer funds were used in the creation of this campaign, which most certainly would cost more than $1 million for a private sector business. The media outlets where these pieces will run also have donated the advertising space to this public service effort.

10% Drop in Violent Crime in 2008

Feb. 18 - The numbers shared today are more than just numbers – they represent 3,000 fewer crime victims in Milwaukee.

"The data shows that focused policing efforts and our strong community partnerships are saving lives and are preventing crimes,” Chief Edward A. Flynn said. “Our core mission is to create neighborhoods capable of sustaining civic life and I am gratified to see that our data show that we are having a significant effect on people’s lives.”

Septmber 7, 2009 - A man whose DNA is linked to nine unsolved homicides of females over a 21-year period has been arrested by Milwaukee Police, Chief Edward A. Flynn and Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm announced Monday, September 7, 2009.

The DNA belonging to Walter E. Ellis, 49, of Milwaukee, was found on the bodies of nine women; eight prostitutes and one female who was a runaway who was involved in the drug trade. The homicides occurred between 1986 and 2007 on Milwaukee’s north side.

On May 18 Chief Flynn and District Attorney Chisholm announced the task force that was formed among the Milwaukee Police Department’s Cold Case Squad, Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office, FBI and the state Division of Criminal Investigation.
