Influenza Immunizations
Influenza ("Flu")
Influenza (Flu) is a common respiratory virus that affects children and adults. There are many strains of flu viruses therefore one vaccine does not provide immunity for all flu strains. New flu vaccines are created every year to prevent illness from the most common strains.
Parents/ guardians may be concerned about the safety of flu vaccines because of the preservative thimerosal which contains a form of mercury called ethyl mercury. Please visit our thimerosal website to learn more about the benefits of flu vaccine and facts about this commonly-used preservative.
Parents/ Guardians, childcare providers and teachers can help prevent the spread of flu by vaccinating children and adults, promoting good hygiene, and keeping children at home when they are sick.
During flu season, as well as throughout the rest of the year, handwashing can also help to stop the spread of many germs, including the flu viruses.
Every year, the CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) provides recommendations for the administration of immunizations for health care professionals. The 2007 ACIP recommendations for influenza are:
