Milwaukee – A Great City for Young Professionals

A recent Forbes.com report has named Milwaukee as one of the top 20 cities in America for young professionals to live, work and play.

The survey calculated a number of factors, including, "where the graduates of top universities across the country ended up 10 years after commencement; where the best business opportunities exist; which cities had the most young and unmarried people; and which cities paid young professionals the best."

Clearly our affordable cost of living, our many Fortune 500 companies, our exciting nightlife and our great, growing neighborhoods were some of the reasons why Milwaukee was rated higher than other cities like Miami, Las Vegas, Dallas, Houston and Phoenix.

Walking the Neighborhood in Avenues West

Last week I joined with residents, business owners, community organizations and police officials to walk the Avenues West neighborhood between 24th and 27th Streets and Michigan and Kilbourn Streets.  Our tour allowed us to connect with the neighborhood, build unity and send a clear signal that crime and violence will not be tolerated on Milwaukee's streets.

Neighborhood Walk

Joining me on the walk were Alderman Bob Bauman of the 4th District, Capt. James Harpole of the Milwaukee Police Department, June Moberly, Executive Director of the Avenues West Association, Keith Stanley, Main Street Manager of SOHI (27th St.), Arn Quakkelaar, CEO & Founder of BASICS (Brothers and Sisters in Christ Serving), representatives of Marquette University and many other residents, business leaders, property managers and faith-based organizations who are working together to strengthen the Avenues West neighborhood.

A Pair of Fairs to Strengthen Milwaukee Families

Last week, I joined the Milwaukee Health Department for a Back to School Fair to prepare families for the upcoming academic year and make sure that Milwaukee schoolchildren start the year healthy and prepared.  More than 3,000 people attended to receive immunizations, physical exams and vision, hearing and dental screenings, and learn more about staying fit and healthy.

Financial Fair

I also participated in a Financial Fair at the Private Industry Council to raise awareness about the resources and tools available to help Milwaukee families and businesses manage finances and improve assets.  More than 400 people attended, and WMCS-1290 Radio did a live-remote broadcast to help spread the word on money management.

New TV Show Films in Milwaukee, More to Come

A film crew from Sony Pictures was in town this week to shoot scenes for the new one-hour NBC pilot, "The Watch." Emmy-winning director Charles McDougall ("Desperate Housewives") and stars Lou Diamond Phillips, Billy Burke and crew (both local and from L.A.) shot scenes throughout Milwaukee.

We received great support from our partners at Midwest Airlines and the Pfister Hotel, and we hope this event will be the start of an exciting new film and television industry for Milwaukee and Wisconsin.  New State tax incentives for filmmakers to shoot shows and movies here are set to take effect January 1, 2008.

A press conference was held to raise awareness for this exciting new development, and included the following: (from left to right): McDougall, Burke, Phillips, Doug Neilson, VISIT Milwaukee, Commerce Secretary Mary Burke (no relation to Billy!), Tourism Secretary Kelli Trumble, Sen. Ted Kanavas, Scott Robbe, executive director of Film Wisconsin, me, Lt. Governor Barbara Lawton and Dave Fantle of VISIT Milwaukee.
