Noise Variances

 NOISE VARIANCE PERMIT APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS

A Temporary Noise Variance Permit may be issued for special community events which are limited in duration and are generally acceptable to the people of the community, provided that precautions are taken to maintain the noises produced at the lowest practical level.

Applications for Temporary Noise Variance Permits must include the following:

1. A completed Request For Temporary Noise Variance Permit.
2. A check payable to CITY OF MILWAUKEE for $40.00.
3. A detailed map of the tent, stage or loud noise producing area (i.e. band, speakers, etc.) in relation to the surrounding residents.
4. A flyer which states what the event consists of. A flyer must be distributed to persons in the immediate area who may be affected by the noise and shall include the following information:
 

a. Address where event will be taking place and the name/phone number of the person responsible for the event.
b. The duration of the event - dates and times.
c. The phone number for the Department of Neighborhood Services 286-5571. The Fax number is 286-5165.
 

Please send your request at least 14 days prior to the event to:

The Department of Neighborhood Services will send an inspector to survey the site of the noise production and the surrounding area for possible violations.
 

If your request is approved by the alderperson and the Department of Neighborhood Services, your request will be granted. At that time, the District Police Captain will be notified of the event.
 

If proper precautions are not taken to minimize the noise to the lowest practical level, the Department of Neighborhood Services and/or Police Department can discontinue the production of noise. The Permit Fee is non-refundable.
