NEWS FROM THE MAYOR

Dear Friends,

Since the day I took office, my top priority has been public safety.  I'm pleased to report we made significant progress toward that end in 2008.  I'm gratified by the numbers recently released by both the Milwaukee Police Department and the Milwaukee Fire Department.

Homicides of young African-American men plunged 65 percent in  2008 (54 of 105 in 2007 to 19 of 71 in 2008).  That's still too many homicides and we have much work to do.  But, it is an astonishing one-year drop.

I am grateful to Chief Flynn and the men and women of the Police Department, the members of the Homicide Review Commission, community church leaders and members, other government agencies and the many youth organizations who have helped to make a difference in our community.

I invite you to share in our success by clicking the link below to view my comments at the press conference recently held with Chief Flynn.

Mayor Barrett on 2008 Homicide Numbers

FIRE DEPARTMENT FATALITIES LOWEST SINCE 2002

Fire deaths were tied for the second lowest number in the past 51 years.  Six people died in Milwaukee fires in 2008, down from 14 in 2007, a 58 percent reduction.  Last year was the second time in more than 20 years there weren't any elderly or child fatalities.

I commend Chief Holton and the brave men and women of the Milwaukee Fire Department for their commitment to protect the residents of our City.

The ability to maintain these numbers will require significant state and federal resources.  I will do everything I can to fight for these resources to ensure the welfare and safety of our residents.

 Sincerely,

Mayor, City of Milwaukee
